WVD and FS Logix. Who is FSLogix?

FSLogix was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 to be the recommended solution for profile redirection in Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) using virtual disks, referred to as containers. The solution not only provides traditional profile redirection, but specific Office 365 data redirection making it one of very few solutions to support Teams and OneDrive.

How does it work?

FSLogix profile containers are not all that different to traditional user profile disks. Using a combination of Group Policy and an agent installed on the session host, when a user signs into a session host, either a new container is created or an existing one is mounted. Access to the container can be configured as direct access for persistent environments or to use differencing disks in pooled host scenarios. This allows users to potentially have concurrent connections to the profile if remote apps are spread across different hosts or host pools.

Where are profiles stored?

Profiles can be stored on any network-based share. For the best performance it is recommended that they be stored on an Azure resource based in the same region as the WVD service. This includes either a VM, Azure Files or the new Azure NetApp Files offering, the latter of which is becoming the recommended location. Which you use comes down to cost constraints and performance demandsThe new Azure NetApp Files service will provide the best performance, but has a minimum storage buy of 4 terabytes. This would make it overkill for smaller environments and likely price it out of contention. If you plan to use a VM, make sure that you use a machine and disk setup that provides suitable max IOPs for the number of containers likely to be stored and accessed.

What does it cost?

For the solution, nothing. If you are licensed for WVD then you can use FSLogix. For clarity, the license required is one of the following:

  • Microsoft 365 E3/E5
  • Microsoft 365 A3/A5/ Student Use Benefits
  • Microsoft 365 F1
  • Microsoft 365 Business
  • Windows 10 Enterprise E3/E5
  • Windows 10 Education A3/A5
  • Windows 10 VDA per user
  • Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Client Access License (CAL)
  • Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Subscriber Access License (SAL)

Storage costs will obviously depend on how and where you decide to store the containers the level of performance you require. One of the beauties of Azure is the ability to change the underlying hardware of a VM with minimal impact, allowing you to tweak and tune cost vs performance.
