What Is Productivity?
When you have worked in the information management world for as long as I have (over 15 years now), you hear the term ‘productivity’ used a lot. Many organisations use this as their mantra and it pops up in almost every scenario, often to emphasise how important it is to maximise profit opportunities or to derive more value from employees.
It’s not all Bad!
This can have quite negative connotations in some cases as it implies that somehow employees are not efficient or that they are somehow falling short of expectations (which may be true in some cases but not all).
Over time this assumption can have a detrimental effect on morale and the idea of productivity can become a sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of employees.
One of the Oxford English dictionary definitions of ‘Productivity’ is as follows:
“The effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input”
This definition (quite correctly) asserts that there is a measurable correlation between the work an employee carries out and how effective that work is.
So what is the aim of this post? One of the key areas we focus on here at Silversands is ensuring that the solutions we deliver address (as far as possible) the expectations of our customers in terms of their understanding of ‘productivity’.
This requires us to understand (and effectively communicate) the ‘new ways of working’. As technology platforms change and evolve, the ways that people work need to evolve also to take advantage of the tools available to them.
What is OneDrive for Business?
One of these tools is OneDrive for Business, which is part of the Microsoft Office 365 cloud platform. This single tool now provides a comprehensive set of end user and management features that will transform the way people work and can facilitate a new level of ‘productivity’ that is both intuitive and above all helpful.
After all why would anyone use a piece of software that people don’t like to talk about?
